Ultrabooks might all come in metal chassis in 2012

The supply of aluminum alloy chassis for ultrabooks may fall short of demand in 2012. Ultrabook models already announced by Acer (Aspire S3), Lenovo (IdeaPad U300s), Toshiba (Portege Z830) and Asus (UX-series), all will ship with the metal chassis.

Capacities at metal chassis makers including Catcher (which supply Acer) and Foxconn have been fully booked to the end of 2011. Catcher Technology already increased the number of its CNC machines to 10,000 in the first half of this year and is expected to expand up to 12,000 by the end of the 2011. Foxconn Technology currently has a total of 9,000 CNC machines.  Asus is buying from China based chassis maker BYD.

HP and Dell (which are expected to launch their ultrabook models soon) are having concerns whether the supply of metal chassis will be sufficient in 2012.
