Lenovo ThinkPad T61 notebook fan error-Part 1

Today we are going to show you a machine, which was brought to us (at Laptoport) with a fan problem.

This Lenovo ThinkPad T61 notebook model comes with a 14.1-inch display, equipped with a 2.20GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 (4M Cache, 800 MHz FSB) Centrino (Merom) processor, 2 x 1GB DDR2 667MHz (PC-5300) memory and a 160GB (5400rpm) hard drive.

The user owned that notebook for about four years, but a year ago it started to overheat, and he decided to downgrade it to Windows XP. We were told, that at that time the cooling fan was still working, because he could hear it making noise.

Recently, the fan stopped working completely. When turned on, the Lenovo was getting a “fan error”, due to no fan motion detected, and was automatically switching down, so as to protect the CPU.

We opened it and cleaned the fan and heat sink, but still when tested it continued to display the same error. It was clear that the fan got faulty and we had to order a replacement.

Below (in the gallery), are all the photos taken from the first opening of the notebook (for reference/ part numbers). In “Part 2” (which will publish later today), we will show you the fan replacement (MCF-216PAM05, 42W2463, 42W2462/ MCF-217PAM05, 42W2461, 42W2460) – photos and a video.
