A 17-inch screen for a laptop, some time ago, would have been considered heresy. Not today, although consumer choices continue to focus mainly on models from 15 inches down. Laptops are often the only computers that are used at home, spend more time on desks than on the go, and have hardware and software configurations suited to the needs of most users. So why not prefer larger monitors?
In this guide, we have selected five products with different technical and price characteristics, in a market where the choice of the best is always relative. And yet, there is a winner, and it’s ASUS ROG Strix SCAR 17, a model that puts on the plate a high-level configuration that makes it suitable for many uses. Below him, with somewhat powerful features, is the Dell Inspiron 17 5770, sold at a slightly lower price, but which proves to be equally efficient.

Best 17 inch Laptops Under $1,000 | Reviews 2021
Buying Guide – How To Choose The Best 17 Inch Laptop?
The best 17-inch laptop is the one that meets your needs, and it is therefore impossible to draw up a ranking that has an absolute value. As you will see, we have tried to explore the different folds of this market, between Macs, laptops for gamers, inexpensive laptops suitable for professional tasks.
In addition to our buying advice, we invite you to read some modest suggestions on the criteria to be adopted in order to understand which features to look for and where to buy.
Types of laptops
You probably already have clear ideas about the size of the screen, but this is only one of the factors, certainly not the most relevant, when choosing a laptop. The market, first of all, proposes a substantial distinction between three different types of laptops: MacBooks, Windows-based computers, and Chromebooks. MacBooks are produced by Apple, and the most updated install an operating system called Catalina, an inseparable software package. They also exist in the Air version, lighter and thinner. Some time ago they ditched the 17-inch size, and we selected the closest one.
Most laptops sold online and in stores, even today, use a Microsoft Windows system in its most up-to-date version. However, a third option has also existed for some years. They are the so-called Chromebooks, whose name derives from the homonymous browser, created by Google. In fact, they take advantage of the ChromeOS system and are basically designed for the Internet: browsing, social networking, e-mail consultation, and use of Google’s online applications.
In reality, we should add the category of hybrid laptops, which in different ways combine the characteristics of the PC and the tablet in a single product. In our guide to choosing the best 17-inch laptop, we have not selected products of this type, which generally have smaller screens.
Hardware: The Ram
Within these three types (plus one) there are then conspicuous differences determined by the hardware, that is to say by the mechanical and electronic component. The PC has two types of memory: RAM and that of the hard disk, or hard disk. Let’s simplify: the RAM contributes, together with the processor (CPU), to the reactivity and speed of the computer in processing data, therefore making programs work.
We recommend, if possible, not to go below 8 gigabytes, to retouch and process, at an amateur level, photos and videos and, of course, to stream Full HD movies on the Internet and play some video games.
You should preferably touch the 16-gigabyte threshold if you need to process graphics, videos, photos, and music at a professional level. Better to go up a little more if you have to work with 3D programs or you are a gamer fanatic. In these cases, the graphics card is crucial.
The hard disk memory coincides with the storage capacity of any digital content, from programs to photos, from texts to videos. Two evaluations must be made on the hard disk memory, one concerns the capacity, the other the technology. As far as capacity is concerned, always consider that there are dozens of Internet storage services (“in the cloud”), even free, which add, in fact, space to the computer’s memory.
In addition, you can use external hard drives, that is, they can be purchased separately and connected to your laptop. A second archive (and maybe even a third one) is always advisable, but those who use cumbersome and demanding programs and need to access content that are always available, cannot do without a space of 250 to 500 gigabytes.
Hard Drive: HDD or SSD?
Technology assessment is a bit more complex. In the reviews, you will often find some emphasis on the difference between an SSD storage drive and an HDD hard drive. In a hard disk, you have to put together pieces of memory that are located, virtually, in different places. This is exactly what the mechanical head of an HDD does, moving back and forth on a spinning disk, like the needle on an old turntable, to gather information from the operating system.
On the SSD disk, however, the data is stored in different memory chips and read, in fact, in parallel. Translated into numbers, it means a recovery speed that travels at least 500 MB / s, but above all an almost zero risk of breakage, even in the event of bumps and falls, a very important detail for laptops, for example. So why are HDDs still so popular?
Because their cost per gigabyte is lower and because, in the long run, barring breakages, they guarantee a greater number of data writing and rewriting operations. Let’s face it: a PC hard drive is unlikely to ever see that milestone. You will change computers much sooner, almost certainly. The presence of a solid memory disk (SSD), in any case, is a good starting point to understand how to choose a good 17-inch laptop.
Frequent Ask Questions
What is a CPU and how do I choose the best one?
The CPU is the fundamental tool for data processing, it largely determines the speed and efficiency of the computer. It is not replaceable, so you have to make the right choice when buying the pc. You don’t have to decide which 17-inch laptop to buy solely based on this parameter, but it is certainly an essential element. Next to the manufacturer’s name (Intel, AMD, PowerPC), find a value in gigahertz: the higher it is, the faster the processor is able to work. The so-called multicore CPUs (dual-core, quad-core, and above) are more powerful. The best laptops today have multi-core CPUs.
The Intel i5 and AMD Ryzen 5 CPUs represent, depending on the model (recognizable by the alphanumeric abbreviation that characterizes them) the medium or medium-high range. They cover normal activities very well (use of Office, Internet, video streaming even in HD, amateur video and photo editing) and even video players, as long as they are not extreme, can be satisfied with them. The i7 processors are of a higher level, but even in this case, it depends on the generation to which they belong.
It is commonly believed that Intel supports video games better, but usually pushes PC prices up a bit. AMD, with the Ryzen line, has become competitive in terms of gaming performance, and costs on average less. Intel i9 and Xeon processors may be the right choice if you are a professional in the multimedia field.
What is a GPU?
The acronym stands for Graphics Processing Unit, and it is a processor that deals exclusively with the processing of data concerning images. It is in fact the main contributor to the computer’s CPU, and it also works in a very similar way in some ways.
The power of a GPU is also largely determined by the so-called clock frequency, expressed in Hertz, which determines how often this component completes its data processing work.
Like the CPU, it has a structure that can consist of multiple cores. It goes without saying that a multicore GPU will be quicker to read and execute the instructions given to it. The quality of the GPU is essential in processing three-dimensional images.
How long does a good laptop last?
The components most subject to breakage and wear are the hard disk, which can however be replaced as well as the battery, and the screen. Some statistics suggest an average life of five years, but in reality, it is a very inaccurate figure.
A laptop can work for up to ten years. The problem is that its computing power, in the meantime, will probably not be more adequate for the continuous updates of operating systems and software. However, you can resort to open-source operating systems, adaptable to old computers that do not want to be scrapped.
What do the abbreviations DDR3, DDR4, and GDDR mean?
We often speak generically of ram, but there are different types. It is important to distinguish them when you want to proceed with an expansion of the available ram. The DDR3 type (the acronym stands for Double Data Rate) arrived first on the market. It goes without saying that it has less advanced features, first of all, higher power consumption and a lower frequency.
The ddr4 can work at frequencies of 3200 MHz, if not higher. GDDR stands for Graphics Double Data Rate. This is a type of RAM used exclusively for graphics cards. For some years now it has replaced VRAM (Video RAM).
