How to choose your student laptop?
Finding the perfect companion for your studies can be a real headache, so many possibilities exist: should you go for a touchscreen tablet with a wireless keyboard or for a laptop? The two possibilities each have their advantages and disadvantages.
In the case of computers, the recipe is simple: you have to find the best combination between the following criteria.
First of all, we must focus on the operating system:
- Windows: they are undoubtedly the most famous in the student community because they are less expensive than a Mac and, being, suddenly, much more widespread, they pose fewer problems of compatibility. However, their battery is generally less, and they quickly run into problems with slowness if you open several pages or programs simultaneously. Finally, they are more susceptible to viruses and long-term heating.
- Mac OS : impeccably designed, thin, and light, they are generally known to be more practical, more intuitive, and easier to use than Windows PCs, while having a very good battery life. But their high cost very often puts them out of the reach of a student.
- Chrome OS: Still little known in Europe, Chromebooks have met with tremendous success in the United States, where they have even overtaken Mac sales. Running on the Chrome OS operating system, free and open-source, they are inexpensive in view of their general quality, fast, efficient in multitasking, and have excellent battery life. As these are specific tools, we invite you to consult our dedicated guide to find out more.
Then, once you have made your choice, you must ensure a good balance between the following criteria:
- Mobility: a day of lessons can be hectic and it is not uncommon that we have to move from one room to another, without necessarily having a socket nearby. In this case, it is essential to have a practical computer to slip into your bag and whose autonomy can last the whole day. In this sense, we advise you to favor models whose screen is small (maximum 15 inches ) and whose autonomy exceeds 8 hours.
- Ergonomics: to be able to take notes easily without risking a fateful cramp that would cause you to miss essential information, it is important that the ergonomics of your computer be studied as much as possible. Particular attention must therefore be paid to comfort, both in terms of the keyboard and the touchpad. It is important that they are spacious and responsive enough to make their use pleasant and not to tire you unnecessarily.
- The power: of course, it is rare that very greedy programs are used in progress but it is necessary to ensure the fluidity of the computer so that you can react instantly when the need arises. In addition, extended power allows you to open a large number of programs in parallel and navigate between them without a hitch. Graphic design students and gaming enthusiasts have more need graphics power to use more intensive software. If these last elements are essential for you, consult our articles dedicated to graphic designers and gamers.
- The screen: a quality display allows you not to strain your eyesight during long periods of use, such as when writing a report. In this sense, it is essential to aim for high brightness and low reflectance so that you can also enjoy the sun this summer. Another important element is the size of the panel: the more you choose a large panel, the more the visual comfort increases but the less your computer is practical to transport.
Chrome OS: a complete and fast operating system
Chromebooks are computers designed by different brands like HP, Acer, or Asus, which run on the same operating system: Chrome OS. The advantage of this system is that it weighs less than its competitors and therefore requires fewer resources. Direct consequence: Chromebooks are very fast. They start in seconds, and with automatic updates, you always have the latest software.
Chrome OS offers many applications. It's never been easier to share your documents and files, collaborate in real-time, and automatically back up your data to the secure cloud. With Chrome OS, you can continue to use your usual software. Traditional programs like Microsoft Office and Skype have Chrome versions, as do Facebook and Instagram. Do your classmates or colleagues use the Microsoft suite? No problem, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are available on the Google Play Store.
Chromebook, not just connected use
Integrated security against viruses
Chromebooks have built-in virus protection. Every time your Chromebook starts up, transparent and rigorous security check-called a "verified boot" is performed in the background to protect you from malware.
Is your Chromebook infected with a virus? With the Powerwash feature, you can easily restore the device to factory settings and get rid of malware at the same time.
Take him on board for the whole day!
The long-lasting battery and slim, convertible designs of Chromebooks allow you to easily carry them around while leaving your charger at home. Chromebook is particularly recognized by teachers and schools around the world for its office applications and tools that can be used remotely.
Such a useful computer for entertainment
Entertain yourself with apps available on the Google Play Store such as Netflix, Disney +, Spotify, Asphalt 9, Roblox, and more! Some models are tactile and offer a multitude of positions including the "tent" which allows, in particular, to watch a film very comfortably. You thus find the ease of use of a tablet or a smartphone, on your computer. For players, the tablet position combined with the touch function gives responsiveness and a very appreciable playfulness.
FAQs Related to ChromeBook OS
What is a Chromebook and Chrome OS?
After smartphones, Google tried to diversify by attacking the laptop markets with Chromebooks. Relatively simple and affordable machines that run on Chrome OS.
Chrome OS is an operating system, like Windows or macOS. The only difference is that it's much lighter: Basically, it does the same things you do with the Chrome web browser. You will be able to go on the internet, use the Google Suite (Drive, Doc, Sheets, and Slide), and find all your extensions as soon as you start your computer using your Gmail address. All with a clean interface and data synchronization with Google Drive.
This is obviously not all. You can also install applications easily installed from the Play Store, like on an Android smartphone. You will have plenty of time to install games or even Microsoft's Office suite if you wish. The only limit will be the power of your machine for the most demanding applications and the available storage space.
The educational and professional circles are paying more and more interest to Chromebooks, for security reasons in particular, because it is possible to use a G Suite account. On the other hand, when it comes to privacy, you will have no other choice but to use Google's services.
Launched in June 2011, Google's operating system has had time to mature and correct its youthful flaws to finally become practical to use. You will have all the facilities in the world to use such machines.
Can Chrome OS replace Windows, Linux, or Mac OS?
New to Chrome OS? Don't worry, there is little chance that you will be confused by Google's interface. It is relatively minimalist like Mac OS where the icons of your favorite applications are pinned at the bottom of the screen.
Chrome OS has an application drawer like on Android. Notifications are displayed in the lower right corner of the computer. There is also a finder (explorer) to more easily access its files and move them on the fly. Navigation is therefore similar to what is done on Windows and Mac.
As mentioned above, a Chromebook will allow you to perform most of the tasks that you do on a PC like writing text, going on the internet, and watching videos. Chrome OS doesn't really have to be ashamed of Windows, Linux, and Mac OS.
However, don't expect to do more with a Chromebook. First, the low power of these machines will automatically limit their capabilities. Then, the Google Play Store is far from having the same library of programs that we know on Windows, Linux, Mac OS, and iOS.
So you can give up video games, for the most part at least. Some publishers still make the effort to offer retouching or editing software. The Adobe Photoshop suite is for example available on the Google Play Store.
In absolute terms, Chrome OS can completely replace other PC operating systems. It is also easy to use and Chromebooks are often affordable. However, keep in mind that you will not often be able to do more advanced things than office automation.
The Chromebook, a laptop that doesn’t need power
Chromebooks aren't powerful machines, that's a given. Quite simply because Chrome OS does not need as many resources as Windows 10 to function, for example.
Start-up takes about ten seconds and navigation between applications is smooth. Chrome OS is really efficient. More than its two main competitors, although Windows 10 has progressed well and Mac OS too.
However, it is good to know how to decipher the technical sheet of a machine to know what it has under the hood. Chromebooks are mainly equipped with an Intel processor and some are more powerful than others. Basically, here's what you need to know:
- Intel Celeron is the lightest processor of the Intel brand. He will be able to perform simple tasks but no more. You may be disappointed with a computer equipped with such a processor. We advise you to go instead on a PC with Intel Pentium at least.
- Intel Pentium is a little more efficient than the Intel Celeron but remains an entry-level processor. It is intended for office use.
- The Intel M3 will make you feel really comfortable in any task. It is even found in MacBooks, Dell XPS 13s, and Surface Laptops.
- Intel i3, i5, and i7: These are processors usually used inexpensive machines and by video game enthusiasts.
However, it is true that Chromebooks are often stingy when it comes to storage space. We feel cramped with only 32 GB of which 27 are actually available because of the space taken by Chrome OS. Fortunately, it is often possible to enlarge it using a micro-SD card.
RAM is also a consideration for people who like to juggle apps and open multiple tabs in Chrome. The more you have, the more comfortable you will be. But 4 GB is the union minimum to have.
Do you still need the internet to use a Chromebook?
This issue has since been resolved. If you are writing a document in Google Docs, for example, you will be able to make a local backup. The update of your document in Drive will take place when you have access to the internet again.
The same goes for other applications that you will already have installed on your machine.
